十五年,是一段时光,更是一群人。

Q&A with Mr. Barrett

Q1:

What first brought you to SWIS over 15 years ago, and what has made you stay all these years?

Mr. Barrett:

I wanted to be a part of something I believed would help me grow as a person and a professional. I also wanted to provide my daughter with a world-class education. SWIS presented itself as that place: a place where people can grow, where the standards are world-class, and where its people can be included in creating that.

Q2:

Your journey at SWIS has taken a meaningful turn—from Drama Teacher to Social and Emotional Counselor. What inspired this shift, and how do your two roles connect?

Mr. Barrett:

I have a great passion for theatre and performance; I get great pleasure from the magic moments that an arts classroom can provide. It is a space where students share their emotions, their fears, and their joy. Observing these moments was what inspired my shift into counseling. I wanted to be part of helping students navigate their challenges and find their best selves.

Q3:

As someone students often turn to for support, could you share a moment or story that deeply touched you or reminded you why you do what you do?

Mr. Barrett:

As a theatre teacher, when you share the rehearsal journey with a performer or ensemble and then see the results on stage, there is almost nothing better. Several student performances have filled me with pride, given me goosebumps, and even brought a tear to my eye. As a counselor, there is great joy in seeing a student move through challenges that once frightened them and made them question their belief in their ability to succeed. When you see students overcome difficulties, find success, and triumph, there is great satisfaction.

Q4:

Having witnessed SWIS’s growth over the years, what changes have stood out to you the most? And what do you feel has remained beautifully constant?

Mr. Barrett:

I think we have always had a foundation of excellence; we consistently present and provide great opportunity for growth. What has changed is that we have continually improved: the standards of our program continue to aim for improvement. We have established ourselves, yet at the same time have always strived to be better.

Q5:

If you could describe the SWIS community in three words, what would they be and why?

Mr. Barrett:

Home, Love, Family


Why? This is my experience at SWIS. It has given a great deal to me and my family and has been our home for a long time. I have seen this in both students and staff. For any place to feel like a home, it has to be full of love; at SWIS, this is a love for teaching and learning, a love for seeing people blossom, and a love for the place itself. It is with this love and sense of home that SWIS feels like a family–a place and a feeling where you feel safe and able to continuously grow.

Q6:

What message would you like to share SWIS as it turns 15 – and with the students who walk its halls today?

Mr. Barrett:

Personally, I’d say congratulations and thank you: for the students who walk the halls–today and tomorrow–be grateful; don’t take what you see and experience at SWIS for granted. It’s the result of a lot of hard work and careful planning. So one of the first things that comes to mind when seeing this question is a song from The Beach Boys: “Be True to Your School”. My experience has been that when you give yourself to SWIS, when you commit yourself to our school, SWIS gives back a lot lot more in return.

Q1:

15年前,是什么吸引您来到 SWIS ?又是什么让您选择一直留在这里?

Mr. Barrett:

我希望成为一份同时带给我个人成长和职业发展的事业的一部分。同时,我也希望为我的女儿提供接受世界**教育的机会。SWIS 正是这样一个地方,一个让人不断成长、拥有***标准,并且让每一位成员都能参与其中、共同创造的家园。

您在 SWIS 的职业路径经历过重要转变,从戏剧老师转型成为中学心理辅导员。是什么促使您做出这样的转变?这两个角色之间又有着怎样的联系?

Mr. Barrett:

我对戏剧和表演充满热情,艺术课堂中那些充满魔力的时刻总能带给我极大的快乐。戏剧课是一个学生可以表达情绪、分享恐惧与喜悦的空间。正是对这些瞬间的观察,让我产生了转向心理辅导工作的想法。我希望能陪伴学生走过挑战,帮助他们成为**的自己。

Q3:

学生经常向您寻求支持,能否分享一个特别打动您,或让您深刻感受到自己工作意义的时刻或故事?

Mr. Barrett:

作为一名戏剧老师,当你和演员们、整个剧组成员一起排练,并最终在舞台上看到作品呈现的那一刻时,那种感觉几乎无可替代。许多学生的表演都让我充满自豪,让我起鸡皮疙瘩,甚至让我感动落泪。


而作为心理辅导员,看到学生走出曾让他们恐惧、甚至怀疑自我的困境,那是一种莫大的喜悦。看着学生克服困难、实现突破、取得成功时,那种满足难以言喻。

Q4:

在见证了 SWIS 这些年的发展后,哪些变化让您印象最深?又有哪些始终保持不变、依然珍贵的部分?

Mr. Barrett:

我认为我们始终拥有追求卓越的基础,持续创造并提供成长的机会。而变化在于我们持续进步、不断提升——我们仍在持续提升课程的标准。我们已经建立起自身的优势,同时也始终在努力成为更好的自己。

Q5:

如果用三个词来形容 SWIS 社区,您会选哪三个?为什么?

Mr. Barrett:

家园、爱、家庭。


这就是我在 SWIS 的真实感受。SWIS 给予了我和我的家人很多,多年来,这里一直是我们的家。我在学生和同事身上也看到了同样的归属感。


一个地方要让人有家的感觉,必须充满爱:在 SWIS,这份爱体现在对教学与学习的热爱、对他人成长的关怀,以及对这个地方本身的热爱。正是因为有这样的爱与归属,SWIS 就像一个大家庭——一个让人感到安心并持续成长的地方。

在 SWIS 迎来15周年之际,您想对学校以及在这里就读的学生说些什么?

Mr. Barrett:

我想说一声“恭喜”,也道一声“感谢”。对于现在就读 SWIS 和未来将会在 SWIS 学习的每一位学生,我想说:请怀抱感恩之心,不要把在这里看到和经历的一切视为理所当然,因为这一切的背后,是很多人的辛勤付出与用心规划。看到这个问题时,我脑海中浮现的是海滩男孩的那首《Be True to Your School》。我的亲身感受是,当你真心投入、全心付出,SWIS 一定会给你更多回馈。
